FMCSA-Mandated Drug Testing for Commercial Drivers
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires commercial drivers to undergo drug testing as part of workplace safety programs. DOT drug testing ensures that drivers operating commercial motor vehicles are not impaired by controlled substances, protecting public safety and company liability.
VitalCheck Labs provides FMCSA 49 CFR Part 40 compliant specimen collection for all DOT drug testing requirements. Our certified collectors maintain strict chain of custody protocols, and all specimens are processed by SAMHSA-certified laboratories with Medical Review Officer (MRO) verification.
The DOT 5-panel drug screen tests for:
- Marijuana (THC)
- Cocaine
- Amphetamines (including methamphetamine, MDMA)
- Opioids (including codeine, morphine, heroin, oxycodone, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone)
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
All testing follows strict federal protocols with laboratory cutoff levels established by the Department of Transportation.

When DOT Drug Testing Is Required
SIX TESTING SCENARIOS:
1. Pre-Employment Testing Required before a driver performs safety-sensitive functions for the first time. VitalCheck provides same-day or next-day scheduling for pre-employment testing.
2. Random Testing Employers must conduct random testing throughout the year (minimum 50% of average number of driver positions annually for drugs, 10% for alcohol). VitalCheck can manage your random selection process and provide short-notice collection services.
3. Post-Accident Testing Required after accidents involving fatality, bodily injury requiring immediate medical treatment, or disabling damage to vehicles requiring tow-away. VitalCheck offers 2-4 hour emergency response for post-accident testing.
4. Reasonable Suspicion Testing When a trained supervisor observes behavior or appearance consistent with drug or alcohol use. VitalCheck provides immediate collection services for reasonable suspicion cases.
5. Return-to-Duty Testing Required before a driver who violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations returns to safety-sensitive duties. VitalCheck coordinates with your SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) for return-to-duty protocols.
6. Follow-Up Testing Required for drivers returning to duty after a violation, as determined by the SAP. VitalCheck can schedule and track follow-up testing programs (minimum 6 tests in 12 months).

Common DOT Drug Testing Questions
How quickly can you collect a post-accident specimen?
VitalCheck offers 2-4 hour emergency response 7 days a week. Call (972) 246-8745 immediately and we'll dispatch a certified collector to your location.
Do you provide the DOT custody and control form (CCF)?
Yes. VitalCheck provides all necessary federal forms and supplies. You don't need to purchase or maintain CCF inventory.
Can you help manage our random testing program?
Yes. VitalCheck can manage your random selection pool, notify selected drivers, schedule collections, and track compliance for your fleet.
What happens if a driver refuses to test?
DOT regulations treat refusal to test the same as a positive result. We document the refusal on the CCF and report to you. The driver is immediately removed from safety-sensitive duties.
How long do test results take?
Negative results typically within 24-48 hours. Positive results take 3-5 business days due to required confirmatory testing and MRO review.
What if a driver is taking prescription medication?
If a test is positive, the Medical Review Officer (MRO) contacts the driver confidentially to discuss any legitimate medical explanations, including valid prescriptions. Only verified positives (no legitimate explanation) are reported to the employer.
Do you service locations outside the DFW metroplex?
VitalCheck's primary service area is Dallas-Fort Worth and surrounding counties (up to 45 miles from Plano). Contact us to discuss testing needs outside this area.
Are you certified by the DOT
VitalCheck's collectors are certified under FMCSA 49 CFR Part 40. Our laboratory partners are SAMHSA-certified, which is the federal certification required for DOT drug testing.
Can we get copies of chain of custody documentation?
Yes. VitalCheck maintains forensic-level documentation. Copies of CCF and chain of custody records are available upon request for legal or compliance purposes.
What if we need testing for non-DOT employees too?
VitalCheck provides both DOT and non-DOT drug testing. Non-DOT testing offers more flexibility in panels and cutoff levels. See our Non-DOT Drug Testing page for details.
